Name: Jo Willoughby
Nickname: The Flying Doctor
Profession/Sport: Alpine Skiing
Country: Great Britain
What I like about my profession/sport: The freedom of movement it allows me. The ability to ski alongside able-bodied people on an equal playing field. The speed that I achieve. The access to the mountains, that I would otherwise not have access to.
In my spare time I like to: Read - (auto)biographies, travel writing, fiction - in fact anything I can get my hands on! I love anthropology, photography, philosophy and basketball training on my own!! I love to travel the world, make friends and learn about different cultures. My philosophy is that life is for living, despite disability. My motto is borrowed from a Candian T-Shirt company: "Do what you like, like what you do". I used to edit and write for the magazine, Ability Now. I also work freelance as a journalist for Welcome To Yorkshire, promoting activities within Yorkshire for people with disabilities
My proudest moment: Realising that medals round your neck and titles to your name are great, but it is how you measure personal success that counts. This epiphany made me realise that success is in the trying, training, the dedication and belief in myself; anything else is a bonus
Did you know: I have a PhD, specialising in language construction and French Modernist poetry, and a 1st Class honours degree in English Literature
RGK Products Used: Daily: Hi-Lite (titanium) Sport: Quattro (titanium) - for basketball
Best advice on how to succeed: Always believe in yourself, even when others are knocking your dream. If you believe it can happen, and are willing to work very hard towards your goal, then you can make things happen. Success is a state of mind - believe it, breathe it, livet it and whatever your results, you are a success in your own life
